It starts with a car crash.

Alyssa Jacobs wakes up in another world, lost and disoriented. When she meets Stephen she learns she's in Crescent, a mysterious world of nightlife, mobsters, and magic. The two band together in hopes of finding their sisters and a way back to the real world they only vaguely remember.

Inspired by the CD Voodoo by Alexz Johnson, this young adult novella is a quick romp through adventure and mystery.

Okay, when I started this- I have to admit, I wasn't impressed. It was flat and lacked description. Moving on from that, the book did get better, just as confusing, but better. It was only towards the end that I started to really enjoy it.

But, overall, a good short story.

Voodoo eBook Samantha Boyette Reviews

This novella begins with a brilliant portrayal of a car crash victim coming in and out of consciousness. Boyette has an amazing grasp of the subject and the portrayal was very real. It was also very well written. The sections flowed together nicely, without gaps and jumps. The story itself was also quite different. It had the potential to keep the reader captivated had it been further developed.

Unfortunately, you do not get to know very much at all about the characters. Even given the fact that it is a novella, the reader should get some feeling as to who the character is. I also cannot picture the world in which the characters found themselves. There was a lack of physical descriptions in this novella. Those descriptions that were present were phenomenal, allowing you to picture the subject perfectly, but in general, descriptions were lacking.
I gave Voodoo four stars because it is four star worthy even though I do agree in parts with the other reviewers who gave lower star ratings. The intro was a bit vague and choppy, but once it got into the telling of the tale, I found it very intriguing.

I find it humoring when a reader complains about how too brief of a description of character there was...what I mean is, without meaning to come off as offensive, is the description given in this one was enough...the rest should be left up to the reader's imagination. For example, with just the description of hair, complexion and eye color, I found it easy to imagine what Stephen looked like. Those basics gave me an idea and that is all you truly need. In Harry Potter, even J.K.'s description of Harry wasn't described to the exact T and yet many of us pictured Harry the same way. Seeing the character how I would like to see him, made a better connection...for me. For me, too much description, I feel, takes away the fun of the imagination.

We already know each review given is based on the reader's opinion and opinions do vary. One reader may absolutely love it and another will call it "bleh"- not that this book is bleh ,because it's not and this is why I'm writing my four star review. For these reasons, this is what makes reviews important and why we have them.
Other readers need to know, it saves us money, it saves us time.

So...now as I step down from my soap box, I'll end my explanation of review by saying this story was a well told one; the layout went perfect, the characters were very likeable and connectable and the contents within were written in just the right amount to keep me drawn in. What cleverness of the author on her interpretation of the possibilities of what might go on inside the comatose mind...

An enjoyable read.
